The National Latina Institute for Reproductive Health Denounces President Trump’s Nominee for the Supreme Court

Washington, D.C. — The National Latina Institute for Reproductive Health opposes President Trump’s nomination of Neil Gorsuch to the Supreme Court. Judge Gorsuch’s judicial record is hostile toward LGBTQ people and women. He has repeatedly ruled against employees in discrimination cases and sided with employers who have sought to deny women access to vital contraceptive care. Jessica González-Rojas, executive director of the National Latina Institute for Reproductive Health (NLIRH), issued the following statement:

“As an organization who fights for health, dignity and justice, the National Latina Institute for Reproductive Health is deeply troubled by President Trump’s nomination of Neil Gorsuch to the United States Supreme Court. NLIRH rejects President Trump’s proposed litmus test concerning Roe v. Wade and his belief that women should be punished for having an abortion. The majority of Latinx* voters agree with Roe v. Wade and do not want to see it overturned; they firmly agree with women making their own decision on the issue without political interference. The Senate must confront Gorsuch’s disturbing record and demand that he affirm his support to uphold the constitutional right enshrined in Roe v. Wade. We will work tirelessly to ensure that our hard-fought right to reproductive healthcare, including abortion, is upheld. We oppose the nomination of this candidate who, through his judicial record has demonstrated an inclination to rolling back the progress we have made in advancing a vision of a society in which reproductive justice — in all of its dimensions– is a reality for everyone. The lives and well-being of our communities and our families hang in the balance.”

*NLIRH, conscious of the importance of gender equity, utilizes gender-neutral terms throughout our work. “Latinx” is a term that challenges the gender binary in the Spanish language and embraces the diversity of genders that often are actively erased from space.
