The National Latina Institute for Reproductive Health Condemns Kavanaugh’s Lifetime Appointment
Washington, D.C. — The National Latina Institute for Reproductive Health (NLIRH) condemns Judge Brett Kavanaugh’s lifetime appointment to the U.S. Supreme Court. The Senate Republican majority confirmed Judge Kavanaugh despite several reports of sexual assault and sexual misconduct, massive opposition from civil and human rights groups, and large-scale public outcry and demonstrations, largely led by women of color. Jessica González-Rojas, Executive Director of NLIRH, issued the following statement:
“Today is a grim day in the history of the United States. Undeterred by the public outrage against Kavanaugh, Republican leadership has chosen to confirm a nominee who is not only anti-woman and anti-immigrant, but is also a perpetrator of sexual violence. Kavanaugh’s personal and judicial record on abortion access, immigrant rights, and the Affordable Care Act, in addition to the recent reports of sexual assault, will have long-lasting and devastating consequences for communities of color, immigrants, LGBTQ individuals, and women. It is tragic and shameful that the Republican majority is willing to put our communities at the mercy of a Justice who is severely unqualified to protect and uphold the constitutional rights of all people. NLIRH continues to believe Dr. Christine Blasey Ford, Deborah Ramirez, Julie Swetnick, and all the brave survivors who have told their story. We will continue to fight for salud, dignidad y justicia for our communities and our families.”
