National Latina Institute for Reproductive Health Endorses Kagan Nomination

In anticipation of the U.S. Senate Judiciary Committee vote, the National Latina Institute for Reproductive Health (NLIRH) calls on the full Senate to confirm Solicitor General Elena Kagan to be Associate Justice of the United States Supreme Court.
NLIRH is proud to endorse Solicitor General Elena Kagan’s appointment to the U.S. Supreme Court based on her testimony last week before the U.S. Senate Judiciary Committee.
As the nation’s leading voice for Latina reproductive health and justice, NLIRH knows first hand that equal protection under the law has a daily impact on the nation’s 46 million Latinos who still report high rates of discrimination. While Solicitor General Kagan did not comment on immigration and other critical issues for the Hispanic community during the hearings, we are satisfied with her responses to questions on the protection of women’s rights, the landmark case Roe v. Wade, as well as the ongoing struggle for gender equality.
NLIRH is thrilled that, if confirmed, there will be three women serving on the U.S. Supreme Court for the first time in history, moving the court one seat closer to reflecting the diversity of experiences in this country.
Solicitor General Elena Kagan completed her testimony in the Supreme Court nomination hearings last week. During which, she affirmed the protection of women’s rights in Roe v. Wade by testifying that it was “settled law” that deserved as much deference as any other legal precedent.
