Statement from Lupe M. Rodríguez, executive director of the National Latina Institute for Reproductive Justice, on Trump’s re-election

This election is a sobering reminder of the state of our country and the white supremacist, anti-immigrant forces that are still alive and well here. Instead of celebrating our first woman of color president, we are reminded of the racism, xenophobia, and bigotry that has marred this country since its founding and has now, once again, made its way to our highest political office.  We’ve also seen a surge in misinformation about abortion, anti-immigrant rhetoric, and voter suppression efforts meant to mislead and deceive people from voting about the issues they care about.

We are deeply alarmed about Trump’s re-election and what this will mean for our communities.

Across the country, Latinos/xs are already struggling to access health care, make ends meet, and survive an immigration system that harms them at every turn. Our communities are still reeling from Trump’s last administration, marked by anti-immigrant rhetoric, nearly half a million detentions of migrant children, and the appointment of anti-abortion judges and officials who are hellbent on banning abortion nationwide.

“As disappointed as we are, we won’t stand by while extremists take away our freedoms.  They may have the moment, but we have the movement and we’re just getting started. At the National Latina Institute for Reproductive Justice, we are committed to fighting for our communities, building our activist base, shaping policies, and shifting culture to fuel a larger reproductive justice movement. We will continue to be a trusted resource of accurate information for our communities, and we won’t stop until we create a country with salud, dignidad y justicia for all.
