Our teams at the state and national level work together with Poderosas to implement strategies that tackle the historical exclusion of Latinas/xs from the planning, development, and implementation of policy campaigns. A movement building approach to policy advocacy is necessary and means that we center Poderosas in our agenda and are building toward both short-term and long-term goals. By simultaneously engaging in policy advocacy and activating Poderosas, we invest in the long-term capacity and power of our base and the movement.
Latina Institute works to shape policy on access to and coverage for abortion care and contraception for Latinas/xs. We advocate against abortion bans, financial barriers to reproductive care such as the Hyde Amendment and the recent changes to defund Title X providers, religious refusals of abortion and contraception, forced parental involvement laws, state-mandated restrictions on abortion care, and fake clinics that often target communities of color.
We advocate for inclusive, progressive legislation like the Equal Access to Abortion Coverage in Health Insurance (EACH) Act, the Women’s Health Protection Act (WHPA), and Virginia’s Reproductive Health and Protection Act (RHPA) and Reproductive Health Equity Act (RHEA). We push for greater access to sexual and reproductive health for our communities by advocating for changes in Medicaid coverage and the Affordable Care Act (ACA).

Latina Institute fights to ensure all im/migrants have access to comprehensive reproductive healthcare independent of status and with dignity. We seek justice for all by advocating for the expansion of insurance coverage for im/migrants through bold legislation like the HEAL for Immigrant Families Act. We support policies that expand Latina/x health access and outcomes, and push back against policies that limit access and criminalize Latinas/xs who are simply trying to obtain healthcare.
As part of our reproductive justice agenda, we support driver’s licenses and municipal IDs for undocumented im/migrants, which lessen their barriers to healthcare access. We work to ensure pregnant people held in im/migrant detention facing denial of care have access to the full range of reproductive healthcare, including prenatal care, postpartum treatment, and abortion care.
The Health Equity and Access under the Law (HEAL) for Immigrant Families Act has been reintroduced in Congress! If passed, HEAL would help im/migrants and Latinas/xs access their basic healthcare rights – including the right to affordable reproductive and sexual healthcare.
