Job Description: NLIRH seeks a Public Affairs & Communications Associate/Senior Public Affairs & Communications Associate who can leverage traditional and new media to keep NLIRH’s edge as the leading national voice and advocate for reproductive justice for the Latina/x community. The candidate must thrive in a fast-paced public affairs shop that is positioning the organization’s voice and brand during a time of exciting growth. The candidate must be a proactive and politically savvy media strategist who can both grasp the complex and interrelated dynamics of reproductive justice work and distill and communicate those concepts to mainstream audiences with pithy messages and first-person stories that are emotive and compelling. 

Candidates should be voracious consumers of all news—from Univision to The New York Times to Remezcla—and not shy about nurturing media relationships and pitching stories to sustain our relevance in an unrelenting 24-hour news cycle. Candidates should doggedly follow current events on reproductive justice and immigrant rights to help position our voice in what is a fast moving and political charged environment. Applicants should equally relish a long-form piece in the New Yorker, as well as the pithy brilliance of 140 characters. Candidates should have a track-record of successfully pitching and getting coverage in national, state and/or local outlets. Ideal candidates are innately comfortable communicating in Spanish and English. 

Position Location: Washington, DC 

Responsibilities include:  

  • Assists with the development and implementation of integrated multi-media communications strategies to position NLIRH as the leading national Latina/x voice on reproductive justice issues;  
  • Drives and sustains relationships with Spanish and English media, including pitching and placing statements and opinion pieces and coordinating engagement and participation of NLIRH’s national and local spokespeople; 
  • Works with the Sr. Director to draft Spanish and English-language media pitches, statements, opinion pieces, talking points, presentations, blog posts, and other key messaging to position NLIRH at the intersection of reproductive justice and immigrant rights; 
  • Contributes to brand management and visibility initiatives for NLIRH; 
  • Monitors and reports out analytics on earned media outcomes as needed; 
  • Track and record all lobbying efforts in a timely manner; 
  • Performs other duties as assigned. 

Main Qualifications: 

  • Minimum 3 to 5 years of experience in media and communications; Hill and/or agency experience a plus; 
  • Bachelor’s Degree or educational equivalent ideally in public policy, communications or journalism;  
  • Cultural competency and experience working with Latina/x communities; 
  • Superior written and oral communication skills in both Spanish and English; 
  • Excellent time and project management skills with a results-driven approach; 
  • Commitment to excellence, accuracy, and high-quality work; 
  • Strong interpersonal skills with a high level of integrity and sound judgment and ability to communicate and work collaboratively across the organization openly and with respect; 
  • Commitment to reproductive justice and other intersecting social justice issues. 
  • Salary Range: Commensurate with experience
