Statement from Lupe M. Rodríguez, Executive Director of the National Latina Institute for Reproductive Justice on the executive order to end Birthright Citizenship
“We vehemently oppose the slew of actions that the Trump-Vance administration has taken to punish and separate im/migrant families, including the executive order attempting to end the constitutionally protected right to citizenship for children born in the US to non-citizens. This does nothing to make our communities safer but only creates more fear and confusion for pregnant people at a time when they most need care and support.
“Let’s be clear: only constitutional amendments – not executive orders – can change the U.S. Constitution. Any attempt to misinterpret the 14th Amendment will only tear families apart and create generations of stateless children who will be denied essential rights, like the right to vote, to education, to healthcare, and to economic security.”
“At the National Latina Institute for Reproductive Justice, we will not allow extremists to take away our freedoms. Our mission for Reproductive Justice includes a dedication to working with im/migrant communities to raise their voices for the same rights as everyone else, and we will work tirelessly to ensure that everyone has the rights and power to take care of themselves and their families.”
