National Latina Institute for Reproductive Health Applauds Kagan Confirmation

The National Latina Institute for Reproductive Health applauds the U.S. Senate for its vote to confirm Solicitor General Elena Kagan as the newest member of the U.S. Supreme Court.

“Solicitor General Kagan’s confirmation signals a victory for women in the highest branches of government and moves the court one seat closer to reflecting the diversity of experiences in this country,” said Silvia Henriquez, executive director of the National Latina Institute for Reproductive Health. “Our hope is that Ms. Kagan will demonstrate the same dedication to women’s rights and equal protections under the law as her predecessor, Justice John Paul Stevens.”
“Solicitor General Kagan will join the U.S. Supreme Court at a pivotal moment in our nation’s legal history. With challenges expected on state immigration laws and gay marriage, among others, her decisions will impact the very social fabric of this country. As she joins the court, we urge her to uphold the needs of those who are most often marginalized in society— immigrants, minorities, and women,” added Henriquez.

In testimony before the Senate Judiciary Committee, Solicitor General Kagan affirmed the protection of women’s rights in Roe v. Wade by testifying that it was “settled law” that deserved as much deference as any other legal precedent.
