NLIRH: Burden of Government Shutdown Falls on Trump Administration’s Inaction

Washington, D.C. — Congress has until midnight Friday, January 19th to pass a Continuing Resolution bill that would fund the government until mid-February. Failure to pass the short-term spending bill will lead to a government shutdown. Nina Esperanza Serrianne, policy analyst for the National Latina Institute for Reproductive Health (NLIRH), issued the following statement:

“The burden of this shutdown falls on the Trump-Pence Administration and the Republicans in Congress who are in charge of three branches of the government. The GOP had since September to reauthorize CHIP and chose not to – it is beyond shameful to pit DREAMers against CHIP recipients. We demand Congress to protect DREAMers, secure long-term funding for CHIP and Community Health Centers, and provide disaster relief for all communities recovering from natural disasters. To further delay any of these programs is not only irresponsible, but also puts peoples very lives at risk.”
