NLIRH Condemns Congress For Passing Life-Threatening Tax Bill

WASHINGTON, D.C. —  In the middle of the night, Senate Republicans voted on the GOP tax bill, providing tax cuts for the wealthy while decimating healthcare for the country. This is an attack on families with low-incomes and communities of color. The Senate vote comes after the House voted on their own version of a tax bill that will decimate Medicare, Medicaid, and programs that help millions of children with low-incomes without any hearings or a score from the Congressional Budget Office. Unlike the House bill, the Senate version includes a repeal of the Affordable Care Act’s (ACA) individual mandate.

The Congressional Budget Office (CBO) estimates that without the ACA’s individual mandate, 13 million people will lose insurance coverage by 2025. In addition, the cost of insurance will rise approximately 10 percent in 2019, creating an average monthly premium for consumers of $1,990. This is in direct contrast with what we have seen this year which is that 4.5 million people insured through the ACA marketplace can find plans with a $0 monthly plan. The expected surge in the cost of coverage means fewer people will be signing up for insurance because they can no longer afford it. The Republican tax plan will also trigger a $25 billion per year cut to Medicare, which will impact 8 percent of the Latinx population.  Congress should be working to fix the ACA, not passing legislation that will further economic inequities and hurt those who rely on the marketplace for insurance coverage.

Nina Esperanza Serrianne, policy analyst for the National Latina Institute for Reproductive Health (NLIRH), issued the following statement:

"By passing this tax bill, the Senate has knowingly jeopardized the lives of millions of people who depend on the ACA for quality, affordable life-saving care. Repealing the individual mandate will be particularly catastrophic to the health, safety, and well-being of the Latinx community. Because of the ACA, Latinxs have seen the largest decline of the uninsurance rate for any ethnic group. From 2013 to 2016, the percentage of uninsured Latinxs has dropped from 42.3 percent to 24.8 percent. However, Latinxs still continue to have the highest uninsured rates when compared to other groups in the U.S. For the Latinx community, eliminating the individual mandate means insurance will become even more unaffordable and health inequities will be further exacerbated.

“The repeal of the individual mandate and cuts to Medicare and Medicare will leave people with low-incomes, Latinxs, mothers, and other underserved populations struggling to support their families and  many without insurance. This tax plan is far from what our communities need. NLIRH denounces the Senate for voting in favor of tax cuts for the wealthy on the backs of working women and their families. NLIRH will continue to fight both the House and Senate versions of these devastating bills as they move through conference.”
