20-week abortion ban would threaten Latina health

In response to the introduction by Senator Lindsey Graham (R-SC) of federal legislation banning abortion at 20 weeks nationwide, Jessica González-Rojas, executive director of the National Latina Institute for Reproductive Health, released the following statement:
“This week, anti-woman legislators in Congress have launched yet another attack on women’s health by proposing a nationwide ban on abortion after 20 weeks. This extreme proposal, which is similar to a ban being proposed in Albuquerque, NM, would hurt Latina health and allow politicians to interfere in a woman’s personal decision-making.
“Latinas and other women of color are disproportionately impacted by these types of abortion bans, which make it more difficult for us to plan the timing and spacing of our families. This is especially infuriating given that many in our community, including young, immigrant, and low-income Latinas in particular, already face severe barriers to accessing affordable, quality health care.
“The Latino community supports the ability of Latinas to make personal decisions about abortion without interference from politicians. We cannot afford to go backward, pushing Latinas into the shadows of health care, where they’ll be forced to seek medical care in potentially unsafe situations.”
