New York The New York Latina Advocacy Network (NY LAN) operates as an extension of NLIRH, serving as the voice and advocacy presence in New York. NY LAN works with activists throughout New York City to organize our communities around issues-based campaigns that impact our families and our lives. Since 2005 after a LOLA was held in New York City, the NY LAN has worked to advance reproductive justice on several levels. While the LAN’s primary focus has shifted over the course of its existence depending on the priority areas of the activists, they have remained committed to grassroots organizing, leadership development, and culture shift work. In the Fall of 2012, a group of young pregnant and parenting youth activists came together to form NLIRH’s Young Moms Cohort. With many of the young mom activists being from New York, this group naturally evolved as the new activist base for the NY LAN in 2013. Participating in federal briefings in Washington, D.C., on-line activism, and various training session, the NY LAN aims to educate, organize, and mobilize pregnant and parenting young people to grow as advocates for young parents and develop as national spokespeople in order to counter the dominant narrative based on teen shaming of young parenting.
