ORGANIZATIONAL DESCRIPTION: Founded in 1994, the mission of the National Latina Institute for Reproductive Health (NLIRH) is to ensure the fundamental human right to reproductive health for Latinas, their families, and their communities through public education, policy advocacy, and community mobilization.​

BACKGROUND:  NLIRH seeks a bookkeeper/staff accountant who has a strong and consistent attention to detail, possesses a good attitude and an ability to work as a team player.  The position will report directly to the company’s Senior Director of Finance and Operations.

He/She will work as part of a dynamic energized Finance/Operations team both in New York City and the Washington DC offices.  NLIRH also has offices in Florida, Texas, and Virginia.

LOCATION: New York City

RESPONSIBILITIES (to include, but not be limited to):

  • Function as part of a 5-member team to perform the day-to-day accounts receivable and accounts payable activities.
  • Record payroll transactions and cash receipts including cash, deposits, credit cards and wires.
  • Record grant commitments by restriction and allocate accordingly.
  • Prepare adjustments for banking accounts and American Express accounts
  • Perform monthly close procedures, as assigned.
  • Analyze and reconcile balance sheet and income accounts, as assigned.
  • Prepare monthly journal entries; assist in the preparation of finance reports.
  • Assist in the tracking and recognition of temporarily restricted grants and donations.
  • Scan checks and invoices for upload to maintain electronic records of payables and receivables activities while also filing hardcopies of same.
  • Analyze and reconcile deferred income.
  • Work with the team to prepare for the annual audit.
  • Prepare periodic and ad-hoc finance reports for Program Directors and Executives as needed.
  • Work with Senior Director of Operations and Finance to track project funds and expenses with relevant staff.
  • Assist the Senior Director of Operations and Finance with other accounting or office management tasks as needed, including payroll reconciliation.

Requirements

  • At least 3 years of relevant work experience;
  • Sound understanding of general accounting principles;
  • Strong knowledge of Microsoft Excel as well as accounting software such as QuickBooks or Intacct;
  • Superb organizational skills & attention to detail;
  • Ability to multitask in a fast-paced environment;
  • Genuine enthusiasm for accounting.
