Organizational description:Founded in 1994, the mission of the National Latina Institute for Reproductive Health (NLIRH) is to build Latina power to guarantee the fundamental human right to reproductive health, dignity and justice. We elevate Latina leaders, mobilize our families and communities, transform the cultural narrative and catalyze policy change. NLIRH is the only national reproductive justice organization dedicated to advancing health, dignity, and justice for the 29 million Latinas, their families, and communities in the United States.

Position Description:NLIRH seeks an Associate Director of Government Relations to advance a national policy agenda designed to protect the reproductive health and rights of Latinas/xs, regardless of immigration status.   The Associate Director of Government Relations is responsible for managing the federal policy team within the Government Relations department. This person, in thought partnership with the Senior Director of Government Relations (hereafter referred to as Senior Director), will pro-actively create and set the direction of federal policy initiatives relating to issues of reproductive health, rights and justice for Latinas and immigrant women. The person in this position will work as part of a dynamic team and in coalition with movement partners. The Associate Director of Government Relations will be supervised and report to the Senior Director of Government Relations in the Washington, D.C. office.   

Position Location: Washington, D.C.

Primary responsibilities:

  • Provide guidance and leadership to a growing federal policy team;
  • Supervise the federal policy team (currently three) in their daily functions in the Government Relations department;
  • Develop annual individual staff work plans, track progress towards goals, and report activities and outcomes for the federal policy team;
  • Serve as a strategic thought partner to Senior Director on federal policy issues and work in concert with the Senior Director to create annual operating plan for the Government Relations team;
  • Track NLIRH federal policy priority trends and work with Senior Director and appropriate departments in the development of strategic responses;
  • Work with the Public Affairs department to develop materials for key audiences on NLIRH federal priorities; 
  • Coordinate with appropriate departments to design and implement national advocacy campaigns; 
  • Provide support to the Senior Director with interdepartmental efforts and activities;
  • Provide support, as needed, to the Senior Director in coalition efforts that cover more than one policy priority;
  • Manage all government relations databases (Politico, Champion list, and Ally list); 
  • Develop and maintain infrastructures that help deliver on the goals of federal policy team;
  • Work closely with NLIRH’s development, operations and finance staff to ensure timely reporting of Government Relations activities and deliverables for grant requirements, lobbying tracking, and budgeting needs; and
  • Other duties as assigned. 

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree required;
  • At least five years of experience in policy work at the federal level is required and three years of management experience;
  • Candidates must have extensive knowledge of reproductive health and rights issues and related social justice issues (healthcare, abortion, immigration, Latina/x civil rights, etc.) with experience in policy; advocacy, organizing, and coalition building;
  • Knowledge of Washington D.C. landscape is required, and preference is given to candidates who have relationships with key policymakers and reproductive health and rights stakeholders; Candidates must possess excellent written and oral communications skills in English;
  • Superb research, organizational, project management, and time management skills;
  • Computer literacy and experience working with various databases; 
  • Ability to work collaboratively in a fast-paced environment and adapt to change as necessary; 
  • Prior community organizing or political campaign experience is preferred; and
  • Demonstrated commitment to reproductive freedom, immigrant women’s rights, social justice, and Latino civil rights.
